Nederburg, the official premium wine partner of Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka, recently donated a fleet of 10 Qhubeka bicycles, expertly assembled at the farm in Paarl. These were given to those from the Dwars River Escape Route, of which YNC Bike Rentals forms part. Based in Kylemore, a previously disadvantaged neighbourhood outside Stellenbosch, this non-profit organisation aims to stimulate tourism in a bid to increase economic growth in the Dwars River Valley situated in the Cape Winelands.
The area extends from the top of the Helshoogte Pass, above Stellenbosch, through to Simondium on the Paarl side and Riverside on the Franschhoek side of the valley. The route/valley is centred by the three towns of Kylemore, Pniel and Languedoc.
Headed up by the formidable Yvonne Carolissen, the Dwars River Escape Route launched YNC Bike Rentals in October 2017 to make bicycles available for visitors to the area, and also to offer culinary, heritage and history, adventure as well as creative and cultural tours.
It is projected that the 10 bicycles to be donated by Nederburg and Qhubeka will contribute in excess of R350 000 per year through tours and rentals, creating three full-time jobs.
Some of Distell’s staff members were present to experience first-hand how bicycles help move people and communities forward. Says Robyn Bradshaw, Nederburg’s global marketing manager: “It’s so encouraging to be working with Qhubeka, a non-profit that advances socio-economic upliftment through the distribution of bicycles within vulnerable communities. They do so not as a hand-out but rather a hand-up, to help community initiatives make a bigger impact in their respective areas of expertise, from tourism, the environment and waste management, to community safety, healthcare, education and so much more.
“Watch this space, as there’s more to come as we prepare to support the formidable Team Dimension Data cycling team as they traverse the flats, hills and mountain stages of the 2018 Tour de France, from 7 to 29 July. It will demand the highest skill, the most extraordinary discipline and the unyielding will to succeed. We know the riders have all those ingredients and more, and we call on you to join us in supporting this special team.”
“It’s a massive opportunity and it deserves everyone’s backing.”
“Nederburg is especially proud to be a partner to the squad that’s also riding for a very important cause. Apart from igniting and spreading a love for cycling in Africa and helping to build the continent’s professional racing skills, the squad is riding for Qhubeka, a non-profit organisation that uses bicycles to move communities forward.”
