Unlock Your Story At Nederburg During The Proe Paarl Winter Festival

– News Article

Explore Nederburg, the Platter’s South African Wine Guide 2017 ‘Winery of the Year’, during this year’s Proe Paarl celebration that runs until the end of August.

Craft your own special story together with family and friends and embark on a beautiful winter journey in Paarl, fondly known as the pearl of the Cape Winelands. Nederburg offers comfort, true country hospitality, an historic atmosphere, and heart-warming food to match wines of exceptional quality.

Get to know the many facets of the winery by starting your journey at the contemporary Visitors’ Centre with coffee or a glass of refreshing Nederburg Cuvée Brut. Here you can also sample a wide selection of Nederburg’s award-winning wines, including the everyday classically-styled The Winemasters wines as well as specialty offerings such as the Manor House, Heritage Heroes, Ingenuity and II Centuries collections. Wines can be enjoyed solo, or paired with a selection of goat milk cheeses. Delicious snack platters with nuts, cheese, bread and mushroom tarts are also on offer.

Take a stroll in the tranquil gardens towards the Old Cellar Museum for a fascinating glimpse of the Nederburg story, from the early days of Nederburg’s founder Philippus Wolvaart to his successors, including winemaking legends like Johann Graue and Günter Brözel. It was they who developed Nederburg’s reputation as one of the most awarded names in South African wine, maintained today by cellar-master Andrea Freeborough and her team of highly-skilled winemakers.

Just a few steps away is Nederburg’s historic manor house dating to 1800, a national monument that is home to The Red Table restaurant. With fireplaces ablaze during the winter months, the plush and comfortable interior of the manor house is the perfect setting for leisurely meals shared with family and friends when chilly outside.

Closed for a winter break from 2 to 30 July, The Red Table will be offering a special Proe Paarl menu for the month of August at only R215 per head (excluding service charge). The menu offers slow-braised beef short rib, wild mushroom risotto and seasonal vegetables, served with a glass of Nederburg The Winemasters Cabernet Sauvignon. A surprise twist on classic South African melktert awaits those able to keep some space for dessert.
Pre-booking is advised.

Don’t leave Nederburg without a visit to the Qhubeka bicycle assembly facility, where bicycles are built for distribution to deserving South Africans via various Qhubeka-affiliated community programmes. Here you will get to meet master bicycle mechanics Beverley Roode and Janine Johnson of Bicycles & Beyond (BAB), the empowerment organisation that manages the facility on behalf of Qhubeka. They are supported in their work by four previously unemployed ladies from the local communities surrounding Nederburg.

Cellar tours are also on offer, and need to be pre-booked. Foreign language tour guides could be arranged by prior appointment.
